A storm moved through and damaged your roof. Now you have to contact your insurance provider, maybe for the first time. Homeowner’s insurance is complicated, and calling your insurance company to make a claim can seem intimidating.
Here are six tips from the Insurance Information Institute to help you get through filing your insurance claim and get your damage repaired as quickly and smoothly as possible:
Review Your Policy
You should have your policy somewhere in your house. Find it, review it and keep it readily available through the entire process. It will clarify the responsibilities of both you and your provider.
Call Your Insurance Agent or Provider Immediately
Time is money. Not only do you want to file your claim quickly so repairs can begin as soon as possible, you also want to ensure that you’re filing your claim within any time limits your provider may have set.
Ask Questions
Ask your insurance agent or provider plenty of questions, even if you know the answers: Am I covered in this scenario? Does my claim exceed my deductible? How long will it take to process my claim? Will I need to obtain estimates for repairs?
Substantiate the Damage
Avoid throwing out damaged items or debris, take video or photos of the damage and inventory any damaged personal items. Provide this information to your adjuster because your insurance company will likely use his or her report to approve your claim.
Keep Your Receipts and Take Notes
Leave a paper trail. There may be out-of-pocket expenses eligible for reimbursement. If you buy materials from the hardware story for a quick fix, temporarily stay at a hotel or replace damaged personal items, those are all expenses your insurance provider may cover. Take notes throughout the process to help you stay organized.
Fill Out the Paperwork
Once your claim is submitted, you have to fill out paperwork. Your insurance provider is required to send the paperwork within a specified time period. Promptly complete it and return it to them as soon as possible, so you can hopefully have your claim approved and get repairs started.
