ROOF LEAK DURING A STORM?

It’s hard to deny that roof leaks are one of the most destructive events that a homeowner can experience. Not only can they cause damage, but they can permanently compromise the structural integrity of the house. But what happens if your roof starts leaking during a storm? Should you try to handle the roof leak repair yourself or just call a professional contractor?

Act Quickly

Roof leaks are easy to notice, especially during a storm when you might hear or see water dripping into your home. Dark spots spreading on the ceiling are also clear signs that you are dealing with a leak. If you notice any of the above, you need to act quickly in order to prevent a bigger problem.

First of all, place water buckets under the leaking roof to minimize the damage done to your floor.

Additionally, since water can cause an electrical fire, you need to unplug and remove any electronics that are near the leak. You should also check the attic and under the ceiling for any potential fire starters. However, it’s important to mention that unplugging electronics can be dangerous, if they are wet, do not touch them, turn the circuit for that area off first.

Ease the Pressure

If the ceiling hasn’t been broken through yet, but you still see small leaks, you should drill a hole into it to allow the water to drain. You can do that using a drill or a screwdriver, depending on the thickness of your ceiling.

But why would you do that? To put it simply, relieving the pressure prevents water from damaging the entire ceiling. Not only that, but poking a hole into your ceiling gives you control over the leaks, allowing you to place buckets more efficiently.

Locate the Source

Once you’ve contained most of the damage, you can start looking for the original source of the leak. You should look for gaps and holes inside your attic or any other visible signs of damage. If you have a sloped roof, then the hole might be on the outside, allowing water to flow down before entering. But since going outside to check during a storm is dangerous, you should leave that to the professionals.

Seal It Up

If you manage to find the original point of entry, you can temporarily seal it up using roofing tape or caulk. Using them inside your attic will help close any holes and prevent more water from pouring inside. However, keep in mind that tape and caulk are just a temporary fix, and you will require a professional roof leak repair.

Leave It to the Professionals

Even though following our tips allows you to prevent further damage, you will still need to contact a roofing contractor. Luckily, Tadlock Roofing is here to inspect and fix your roof, no matter what damage it has sustained.
